After honorably serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Fred Bruner first tried his hand at mining in Miami, Arizona but soon found out he was not cut out to be a miner. In September of 1946 he enrolled at Arizona State College in Tempe, Arizona. He graduated with a BA in Elementary Education in May of 1950, and that autumn he was hired by the Bisbee Unified School District. He taught in Bisbee for 37 years and retired in 1986.
