During 1915 Rait was chief engineer for the Calumet & Arizona Mining Company involved in a expedition for Greenway to acquire phosphate rock for the mining company in Mexico aboard the ship called the Ramona. The Ramona was involved in a shipwreck off the coast of Mexico.
